How Many Ticks Actually Carry Disease? Infection Rates Explained
In short: Most ticks aren't infected at all — and even an infected tick doesn't guarantee transmission. How high the share of infected ticks actually is depends heavily on region, pathogen, and even the tick's life stage. For the TBE virus, study rates are usually under 1%; for Borrelia, they're markedly higher, but just as variable.
TBE virus in ticks — usually under 1%
Several regional studies from German TBE risk areas show that even where the virus officially occurs, only a very small share of ticks is actually infected.
- Rhine-Main region (Hesse), 2009–2010: 0–0.2% in risk areas (3 of 3,947 ticks tested), 0% in non-risk areas
- Lower Bavaria/Upper Palatinate, 2010: an average of 0.26%, up to 2.86% at the individual sites most affected
- Odenwald (crowdsourced study, 17,893 ticks tested): a mean of 0.04%, up to 0.12% depending on district
Important for understanding this: a "TBE risk area" describes where the virus occurs within the tick population — not how high the share of infected ticks is there. Even inside a risk area, the vast majority of ticks remain virus-free.
Borrelia in ticks — more common, but wildly variable by region
For Borrelia (the bacteria behind Lyme disease), the rates found are markedly higher than for the TBE virus, but they also vary a great deal:
- An older study from West Berlin (1986): 2.5% in nymphs, 10.2% in adult female ticks, 5.3% in adult male ticks
- The Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL): cites European average figures of roughly 10–20% overall — around 20% in adult ticks, 10% in nymphs, 1% in larvae
Many guides cite a range of 5 to 35%, with lower values in northern Germany and higher ones in the south and center. An important caveat: this broad range can't be traced back to a single, clearly identified study — it summarizes several regional studies and should be understood as a rough orientation, not as an exact, officially established figure.
Why the exact number is secondary
Even at the highest rates cited, the majority of ticks are not infected — but you can't tell from looking at a tick whether it's one of the few that are. That's why it's worth treating every tick the same way: remove it quickly and correctly.
